Statement

Seduced by the duplicity of delicate and strong beauty observed in nature, my work reimagines, rather than replicates memories. Shapes abstracted from flora and textures pulled from the deep seas cause an intriguing coupling to occur.

Wheel thrown and hand built stoneware forms serve as vehicles for exploration as I work to meld body and surface.
Using a personal visual vocabulary, I focus on the interplay between deeply carved lines of undulating curves and rich hand texturing that pierces and prods through the clay's surface to create an energetic dynamic.

Extracting texture and repositioning it into modern design emphasizes my play on duplicity.
The process of repetitive hand texturing is experienced as a working meditation.

The discreet application of glossy clear glaze creates a glisten as it trickles along the surface.
The resulting appearance of these objects often implies fragility and grace, secretly disguising the strength and stability of their constitution.

Bio

Judi Tavill is a ceramic artist with a studio based on the oceanic shore of New Jersey.

Born in 1968 in Baltimore, MD, she received her BFA in Fashion Design from the Washington University in Saint Louis in 1990.

Tavill achieved swift success as a fashion and textile print designer prior to the birth of her children.

She left her career in fashion to pursue her art interests in 2002 and after delving into various mediums, she found clay in 2003.

Tavill pursued ceramics with a voracious appetite, beginning at a local craft center and attending a great variety of craft school intensives in the following years.

Her current studio practice involves tasks of repetition and contemplation that serve as a working meditation.

Outside of her studio practice, Tavill enjoys frequent travel with her husband and family and finds that it reinvigorates and inspires her work.

She has travelled to lead demonstration and hands-on workshops as well as having taught locally and volunteering to work with special needs students.
